My wife and I went to see another terrific show by Natalie MacMaster last night. This being our 3rd time to see her live. What a marvel to see and hear! The excitement and energy of the band flies right off and into the audience.
Natalie is not only a great performer, but so relaxed and free. She had a broken toe and took off her shoes at one point, playing the rest of the night in socks! She did not disappoint. She still offered to show some terrific steps prior to taking off the shoes. A completely unplanned segment of the night and a true delight to watch.
Even after taking off the shoes, she later showed some neat moves, including a moonwalk which had some of the audience chuckling.
I also like her humbleness. The show is not about her. Each musician had their own solos and was able to really show us their skills.
It was a fun night with a good mix of rockin' upbeat with some softer tunes. They played 'Catharsis', one of my favorites, not only for the leads, but also for the great drumming and bass. From offbeat hi-hat and nice playing on the bell of the ride cymbal, and a nice driving bass line, the rhythm section really keeps the drive going.
'Volcanic Jig' off the new album was a nice on-fire (like the name suggests) tune. Really enjoyable and just kept building and building with a beautiful electric guitar mixed in there. 'David's Jig', another off the new album was made of either 14 or 16 turns and really showed the craziness and speed of Natalie, the piper, and piano.
The final song took us to our feet at the end. This was followed by an encore which was one of the highlights of the night. Fun. Wild. Exciting.
...aahhhh...makes me want to head to Cape Breton.
